What I do...

  • Finding a new path as Professor Emeritus of Music after teaching music theory, history, & composition at Elmhurst University (formerly Elmhurst College) for over three decades
  • Travel to India as often as possible
  • 2017-18 Fulbright-Nehru Scholar at Madras Christian College
  • Took students to Chennai & other destinations in India to study Indian music, art & culture
  • Visiting professor at Madras Christian College in fall 2009
  • Write the Instructor’s Resource Manual for Joseph Kerman’s and Gary Tomlinson’s Listen
  • Play with my Mac, composing music and creating multimedia resources
  • Spend as much time as I can with my wife, Virginia Dixon
  • Travel to find woods, water, mountains ... and 12 grandchildren!
  • Active in College Music Society and Association for Technology in Music Instruction
  • Embarrassed to discover that ... I really like opera
  • Wish I could be ... watching the weather roll in over Lake Superior

  • iFrom the Big Temples to the Silver Screen: The Music of South India—Syllabus for my most recent experience (2016) with Elmhurst students in India. Five intense days of music lessons at Pt. Nagarajrao Havaldar’s home in Bengaluru—a true gurukulam exerience—proved the perfect preparation for subsequent musical experiences in Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, and Thanjavur, culminating in the Thyagaraja Aradhana in Thiruvaiyaru.
